Rudy Giuliani, former New York mayor and lawyer for Donald Trump, turned himself in at a jail in Atlanta on charges related to efforts to overturn Trump’s loss in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. Giuliani was indicted last week, along with Trump and 17 others, for participating in a conspiracy to subvert the will of the voters after Trump’s defeat to Joe Biden. Giuliani is accused of spearheading the efforts to convince state lawmakers to ignore voter will and unlawfully appoint electors favorable to Trump.

Other high-profile defendants, including attorney Jenna Ellis and lawyer Sidney Powell, also surrendered on Wednesday. Georgia was one of several key states that Trump lost by narrow margins, leading him and his allies to falsely claim that the election was rigged. Giuliani is charged with making false statements, soliciting false testimony, and conspiring to create fraudulent documents. Trump repeated his claims of a rigged election and criticized the indictment on social media.

Mark Meadows, former White House chief of staff, and Jeffrey Clark, former Justice Department official, are attempting to have the case against them heard in federal court rather than the Fulton County Superior Court. They requested to avoid arrest while their requests are pending, but the request was denied. Fulton County District Attorney Willis has set a deadline for the defendants to turn themselves in, and negotiations for bond amounts and conditions are underway. Meanwhile, Giuliani maintains that the charges are an attack on the American people.
