Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, who is 96, has entered hospice care at home, following in the footsteps of her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, who started hospice care in February. Their grandson said in a statement on Friday that both Rosalynn and President Carter are spending time with each other and with family. Rosalynn Carter was diagnosed with dementia in May and remains happily living at home with her husband, Jimmy Carter, enjoying the spring in their Georgia town and visiting with loved ones.
Jimmy Carter, who is 99 years old, is the oldest-living American president and the longest-living in U.S. history. The couple, who have been married since 1946, are also the longest-married presidential couple in American history. Their grandson said they are continuing to spend time together and with their family. President Jimmy Carter once said that marrying Rosalynn was “the most important thing in my life.” They made a rare public appearance at the Plains Peanut Festival in September, attending the festival in their Georgia hometown. The couple has four children, three sons and one daughter, and are grandparents to 12 (one deceased) and great-grandparents to 14 children, according to the Jimmy Carter Library.
