Travelers passing through Tampa International and other major Florida airports are experiencing delays and cancellations due to a band of severe storms near Georgia. The disruptions began on Saturday and continued into Sunday, with an airport spokesperson attributing the ongoing issues to a backlog of approximately 10,000 passengers who were unable to travel the day before. The airport is also facing record-high numbers of travelers this spring break season compared to last year, with as many as 100,000 people expected to arrive and depart on Sunday alone.

With such a high volume of flights, the Federal Aviation Administration has implemented measures to slow down certain flights in order to alleviate congestion in the sky. By 6 p.m. on Saturday, about half of the 650 flights arriving and departing from Tampa International Airport had been delayed, and 82 had been canceled. This surge in flight disruptions coincides with the beginning of local spring breaks, making it one of the busiest travel days for the airport. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines before heading to the airport to ensure their flights are running on schedule, as the delays are expected to have cascading effects throughout the weekend.

Despite the challenges posed by the storm-related delays, airline representatives are working diligently to accommodate affected passengers and minimize disruptions. However, the ripple effects of the flight cancellations and delays are anticipated to linger throughout the weekend. As the airport grapples with an influx of spring break travelers and the aftermath of the stormy weather, travelers are encouraged to stay informed and flexible with their travel plans to navigate the ongoing disruptions seamlessly.
