Google has announced in an email to users that it will be phasing out the VPN service that comes with Google One later this year. Originally introduced in 2020 for users with a plan of at least 2TB of storage, the feature was later expanded to all One plans to make it more accessible. Despite being available in 22 countries on both iOS and Android devices, Google has stated that the VPN service will be discontinued due to low usage, with resources being redirected to more popular One features.

Users can currently utilize Google One’s VPN service to mask their internet activity on both Mac and Windows computers in addition to mobile devices. While a specific date for the shutdown has not been provided, Google has assured users that they will still have access to the free VPN included with Pixel devices through the Settings app on Pixel 7 devices and newer models. The decision to discontinue the Google One VPN comes as the company aims to focus on enhancing and supporting features that see higher levels of engagement and demand within the Google One ecosystem.

Despite efforts to make the VPN service more inclusive by expanding it to all One plans, ultimately, Google has determined that the feature did not see enough user engagement to justify its continuation. With the company allocating resources to cater to more popular aspects of the Google One service, users who have been utilizing the Google One VPN will need to seek alternative options for their online privacy and security needs. As the tech giant shifts its focus, users can expect to see continued support and improvement in other areas of the Google One platform moving forward.
