In heartbreaking news, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of K9 Dax, a decorated former K9 officer who passed away on Friday. Dax, a German Shepherd who served with Deputy John Forlenza, joined the department in 2015 at just 13 months old and played a crucial role in the department’s operations for several years. Sadly, Dax suffered a severe injury in early March while apprehending a suspect, leading to his retirement from active duty.
Despite undergoing intensive physical therapy, Dax was unable to return to service due to injuries to his neck and spine, resulting in temporary paralysis to his hindquarters. The brave K9 was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) and was ultimately retired from service in March. Sheriff John Idleburg expressed deep sorrow at Dax’s passing, highlighting his contributions in saving lives and apprehending criminals during his time with the department. Dax, along with Deputy Forlenza, successfully located over 400 missing individuals and fleeing felons, making a significant impact on the Lake County community.
Following his retirement, Dax spent his remaining time with Forlenza and his family, where he received love and care in his final days. A ceremony was held to honor Dax’s service and dedication to the people of Lake County, recognizing him as a true hero and thanking him for his unwavering commitment to duty. Dax’s legacy as a dedicated K9 officer will forever be remembered in the hearts of those he served and the lives he touched during his time with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
