“Tales of the Shire,” a cozy life simulation game set in the world of “The Lord of the Rings,” has been postponed until 2025. Originally scheduled for release this year, the game’s developer, Weta Workshop, who also worked on the effects in Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth films, cited the need for extra time to ensure that players experience a fully realized version of its vision.
The game, inspired by popular titles such as “Animal Crossing” and “Stardew Valley,” is situated in Tolkien’s Middle-earth timeline between the events of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings.” This combination of a cozy simulation game with a beloved intellectual property has historically been successful, as evidenced by the popular reception of titles like “Disney Dreamlight Valley.”
In “Tales of the Shire,” players will engage in activities that fit seamlessly with the Hobbit lifestyle. These activities include meal preparation, with a focus on the Hobbits’ well-known love of feasting, and the design of personal Hobbit homes. Essential gameplay elements such as fishing, farming, and a robust character interaction system are also included. It remains unclear whether romantic relationships will feature, although it is hinted that expanding the Hobbit population could be a gameplay element.
Weta Workshop will hold a live showcase event on September 22 at 10:30 AM ET to discuss new aspects of the game and its mechanics. During this event, an official release date in 2025 is expected to be announced. There may also be updates regarding the potential for Hobbit-based romance in the game.
The delay of “Tales of the Shire” invites speculation about other culturally significant intellectual properties that could be adapted into the cozy life simulation genre. While the post-apocalyptic setting of “The Walking Dead” may conflict with the genre’s typically relaxing nature due to the presence of zombies, other franchises could be suitable. For instance, farming or society-building on a remote planet in the “Star Wars” universe or in Knowhere from the Marvel Cinematic Universe could provide fitting alternatives.
