Director Denis Villeneuve is preparing to return to the world of Arrakis. Known for his work on Dune Part One and Part Two, Villeneuve has expressed an interest in creating a third film, Dune Messiah. Initially, he indicated a need for a hiatus, but following Warner Bros.’ announcement of a mysterious December 2026 release date for his next project, Villeneuve has shifted his perspective.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Villeneuve stated, "Let’s say that I thought after Part Two I would take a break… But the woods weren’t really suiting me, and I would go back behind the camera faster than I think." He further revealed that he has been working on the script for Dune Messiah, which is set 12 years after the events of Dune Part Two, and is currently in the writing phase. Villeneuve sees Dune Part One and Part Two as a complete film but considers Messiah a distinct project.
Echoing the path of Herbert’s Dune Messiah, Villeneuve noted, "The story takes place 12 years after we left the characters at the end of Part Two. Their journey, their story is different this time, and that’s why I always say that while it’s the same world it’s a new film with new circumstances."
Villeneuve has confirmed the expected return of major characters, including Timothée Chalamet as Paul, Zendaya as Chani, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Paul’s sister, Alia. He stated, "They have to return… And more worms. What can I say?"
Depending on Villeneuve’s fidelity to the Dune Messiah storyline, audiences might also witness the return of characters portrayed by Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and Jason Momoa. Chalamet had alluded to this potential during previous discussions.
While Villeneuve did not specify a timeline for filming or releasing the movie, he acknowledged some developments expected for 2026. Warner Bros. anticipates this timeframe, suggesting production needs to commence early in the new year. While Villeneuve might not get his break from the Dune universe, progress will likely continue as planned.
