Google has introduced several updates to its NotebookLM software, particularly concerning its audio overview features. The platform’s Audio Overview tool employs AI to create audio summaries from content, initially focusing on written material. Recent enhancements allow users to provide specific instructions before generating a “Deep Dive” overview, enabling them to direct the software to emphasize a particular topic or modify the expertise level to cater to a specific audience. Google describes this option as akin to providing the AI hosts with a quick briefing before they begin.
Additionally, a new background listening feature has been introduced. This feature allows users to listen to audio overviews while engaging in other activities within NotebookLM. Google assures users that they can query sources, receive citations, and explore relevant quotes without having to pause the audio.
The removal of the “experimental” label from NotebookLM signals the software’s successful trial phase, with the initial launch having taken place in December. Moreover, Google announced an impending expansion of the software, primarily aimed at commercial use. This expansion will include enhanced features tailored for businesses, universities, and organizations. Businesses interested in these new capabilities can apply for early access to the pilot program.
