For several months, it has been known that Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan will portray senseis teaming up for a new film set within the Karate Kid universe. In a world where the Netflix show Cobra Kai exists, questions have arisen regarding the nature of this movie. Today, at New York Comic Con, Sony provided some insights into the film, which is now titled Karate Kid Legends.

The film features Ben Wang as Li Fong, a new student who learns martial arts from Daniel LaRusso, played by Macchio, and Mr. Han, portrayed by Chan. The cast also includes Joshua Jackson, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Ming-Na Wen, Aramis Knight, Sadie Stanley, Wyatt Oleff, and Jennifer-Lyn Christie. Chan and Macchio sent a video message to introduce the film’s first trailer, which was exclusively shown at the event, highlighting New York City’s significant role in the film, making the location a fitting backdrop for the reveal.

The trailer, although not released to the public, suggests that Mr. Han takes a prominent role among the legacy characters, discussing tradition with a historical focus on both kung fu and karate. A scene depicts Han and LaRusso meeting, where LaRusso presumes Han is searching for Mr. Miyagi. Han clarifies, "I did not come looking for Mr. Miyagi. I came looking for you."

Scenes of Li, portrayed by Wang, show him navigating New York, facing challenges such as being attacked on the subway, and receiving training from Mr. Han. The trailer includes street fights and a sequence where Li is pursued by an unidentified assailant. As the action intensifies, a montage of training between Li and Mr. Han leads to a climax featuring Li in several tournament matches. LaRusso’s line, "Two branches, one tree," suggests a collaborative effort between him and Han.

Although the announcement provided some details, it leaves room for speculation. The film seems to focus on the partnership between the two senseis, who share a backstory unknown to LaRusso. Li Fong is a central figure in their journey, and the narrative is heavily rooted in New York City. This setting raises questions about potential appearances from Cobra Kai characters, although it is unlikely they will feature, given the series’ timeline.

While the public has yet to see the trailer, a promotional poster has been released. Karate Kid Legends, starring Jackie Chan, Ben Wang, and Ralph Macchio, will premiere exclusively in theaters on May 30, 2025.

Further updates on the world of The Karate Kid are anticipated, with Cobra Kai returning to Netflix on November 15 for the second part of its final season. The subsequent conclusion of the show next year will pave the way for this film. Directed by Jonathan Entwistle, Karate Kid Legends is scheduled to open on May 30, 2025.
