Nightdive Studios has revitalized another cult classic game for contemporary audiences with “Killing Time: Resurrected,” a modern update of the original 1996 game released for 3DO and PC. The original game was recognized for its innovative blend of full-motion video (FMV) with first-person shooter elements, and it stood out during the mid-1990s.
Similar to other works from Nightdive Studios, “Killing Time: Resurrected” goes beyond a typical remaster. The game features 4K resolution visuals, a frame cap of 144Hz, and modern enhancements such as anti-aliasing. Additionally, menu art and 2D screens have been completely revamped.
Regarding gameplay features, players now have access to all weapons from the original 3DO and PC versions. In the 1990s, several weapons were exclusive to each version. There is also newly discovered content that was removed from the original game, including a pool house stage and a shipwreck.
The 50 live-action FMV sequences have undergone full remastering, adding vibrancy to the remake. Players can switch between the original and updated visuals, which provides a classic touch. Nightdive Studios has also ensured “upscaled environmental texturing, smoother gameplay, and more responsive controls.”
The previously lengthy load times between areas have been entirely removed, addressing a major issue from the original release. “Killing Time: Resurrected” is available for purchase on PC via Steam, currently offered at a launch sale price of $20, reduced from its original $25 price.
Nightdive Studios has been actively producing high-quality remakes and remasters, including the critically acclaimed remaster of “Star Wars: Dark Forces” and a comprehensive remake of “System Shock.” The studio was recently acquired by Atari.
