It has been two decades since Apple discontinued the iMac G4, a distinctive computer known for its spherical base and a flat-screen LCD on an adjustable arm. In its original form, the iMac G4 serves as a nostalgic artifact but is deemed impractical for contemporary use. However, with the introduction of Juicy Crumb’s DockLite G4, this classic iMac can now be used as an external monitor.
The DockLite G4 acts as a replacement motherboard for the original iMac G4’s board, featuring an HDMI port, three USB-A ports, a USB-C port, and 3.5mm audio ports. Crucially, it utilizes the iMac’s existing mounting holes and internal connectors for power and video, making installation straightforward with only a couple of screwdrivers and a prying tool, with no soldering necessary.
The installation of the DockLite G4 into a 17-inch 1.25GHz iMac G4, purchased from eBay, required approximately 30 minutes to complete. After removing the motherboard, placing the DockLite, and reassembling, various devices, such as a MacBook Air and an Anbernic GBA SP replica, could be connected. Juicy Crumb provides a video guide to assist users, making this process simpler compared to some alternative DIY methods.
Once installed, the DockLite enables the iMac to function as an external display. The monitor goes into sleep mode alongside the connected computer, though users must manually press the iMac’s power button to turn off the backlight. Brightness can be adjusted via software or through hardware buttons at the back of the unit.
This modification does come with some trade-offs, such as the loss of the iMac’s optical drive functionality. Furthermore, it cannot serve as a standalone computer without further internal modifications, such as those involving additional hardware like a Mac Mini. However, the modification is reversible, allowing users to reinstate the original motherboard at any time.
Priced at $260, the DockLite G4 is considered an expensive investment. Timothy de Denaro, CEO and co-founder of Juicy Crumb, explained that this cost reflects the time, effort, and resources required to bring the DockLite to market. As it is a low-volume product, each unit is manually tested by him before being shipped to customers. Despite the cost, the appeal of the iMac G4’s classic design remains a strong motivation for its continued use.
