On Thursday, Google announced a significant update to its Maps service, integrating advanced artificial intelligence technology, similar to that previously incorporated into its dominant search engine. This development aims to enhance Google Maps, which was introduced almost two decades ago as part of Google’s efforts to expand its technological capabilities and user base.
Google Maps, which recently surpassed 2 billion monthly users globally, will now utilize AI-powered Gemini technology. This enhancement aims to transform the application from merely a navigational tool into a comprehensive entertainment guide. Starting this week, users in the United States can interact with Google Maps to receive recommendations for activities near specific locations within a city or neighborhood. This includes curated lists of restaurants, bars, and other local attractions, accompanied by user reviews. Additionally, the new features will provide detailed parking information and walking directions from parking spots to the user’s final destination.
Miriam Daniel, General Manager of Google Maps, expressed the significance of these changes during a press event in Palo Alto, California, stating the company is on the verge of a new era in mapping. The updates aim to enhance navigation and exploration for users.
Addressing past user complaints, Google Maps will offer more detailed imagery to assist drivers in lane selection before making turns. Furthermore, external developers will have access to the language models of Google’s Gemini technology to allow queries about specific locations, such as apartments or restaurants. This feature, initially available in a test phase, includes a fact-checking procedure that Google refers to as “grounding.”
Google’s Waze, known for its real-time driving directions, will also adopt AI features, allowing approximately 180 million monthly users to report road hazards and other travel-affecting issues through a conversational interface.
The decision to incorporate AI into Google Maps reflects Google’s increasing confidence in its ability to manage its AI technology, preventing the dissemination of false or misleading information, or “hallucinations.” Despite prior incidents, such as inaccurate advice and historical errors, Google continues to refine its AI systems for reliability and accuracy.
