Meta announced that its text-based chat feature, known as “world chat,” will be available for all users of Horizon Worlds starting this week. This feature allows users to communicate within the virtual reality (VR) experience without using their voice. It was initially introduced in a limited capacity in June. The world chat feature can be accessed by lifting the left wrist in VR and selecting the world icon inside a speech box. To facilitate easier communication, Meta provides quick replies to avoid the hassle of manually typing out messages in VR.
The effectiveness and usefulness of world chat have yet to be determined, as the author does not have access to it at the moment. It is also uncertain whether this feature is exclusive to the VR version of Horizon Worlds or if it is available on the recently launched mobile and web versions as well. However, clarification has been requested from Meta in this regard. Despite initial struggles in retaining users, Meta has been continuously improving Horizon Worlds, incorporating features such as world chat, enhanced moderation tools, and avatar legs. While it still has a way to go in competing with social apps like Roblox or Fortnite, Horizon Worlds is making progress in its development.
