The latest $420,000 all-electric Rolls-Royce Spectre boasts several impressive features. Beyond its luxurious ride quality, illuminated headliner, 577 horsepower, and 266 miles of range, its standout aspect is the sound it produces. Although the Spectre, as an electric vehicle, lacks traditional engine noise, it compensates with a digital tone that plays upon acceleration. This sound is unlike any other modern electric vehicle, reminiscent of a science fiction movie scene where an ominous alien force descends from the sky.

The sound produced by the Spectre is subtle yet pronounced in the otherwise quiet cabin, enhancing the driving experience with a unique auditory sensation. The craftsmanship of Rolls-Royce, established in 1904, seems to have culminated in this moment, as the Spectre represents the brand’s first battery-electric vehicle. It houses two electric motors that generate 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. Despite its heft of 6,371 pounds, greater than a Cadillac Escalade, the Spectre accelerates to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. While it offers rapid acceleration, driving it more leisurely maximizes its range to 266 miles on a single charge from its 102 kWh battery.

The Spectre’s performance is complemented by a calm and composed driving experience, with a throttle pedal that requires deliberate application to unleash its full power. Its brake pedal and steering are similarly calibrated for a relaxed drive, highlighted by rear-wheel steering that aids maneuverability.

Technological features in the Spectre, like the 360-degree camera and automated parking, are contributions from parent company BMW, although some desired features like the hands-off driver assist system remain absent. The infotainment system is modern, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though there were issues with the latter on some devices. The audio system, though powerful and subtle, does not support Dolby Atmos.

Pricing for the Spectre starts at $420,000, but with various customizations such as the distinctive chartreuse paint, additional costs quickly increase the price to approximately $560,100, including a destination charge. While it may not represent a value purchase, the Spectre’s exceptional attributes, especially its unique sound, contribute to its allure.

Future Rolls-Royce electric vehicles, including a planned SUV in 2027 and a transition to an all-electric lineup by 2030, promise further innovation. Whether these upcoming models maintain the exceptional sound quality of the Spectre remains to be seen, but they offer a promising start for the brand’s electric journey.
