The Google Pixel 8 series has introduced Face Unlock authentication for banking and secure apps using new hardware and biometric specifications. This feature was missing from previous Pixel models, including the Pixel 7 and Pixel 6, due to a lack of dedicated hardware. With the inclusion of new sensors and machine learning algorithms in the Pixel 8 series, users can now make NFC payments and sign in to other apps using Face Unlock. While Google may be late in implementing this feature compared to other Android smartphone makers, the Pixel 8 has other notable features that make it worth considering for users of older Pixel models.

The Pixel 8’s Face Unlock feature is made possible by the new sensors, Tensor G3 SoC, and Titan M2 security chip included in the device. However, it is unclear if Face Unlock has been improved to work in low-light conditions, so users may still need to use their PIN or fingerprint in such scenarios. Google has listed Face Unlock on par with fingerprint authentication for banking and secure apps, allowing users to interchangeably use either method. While Google has been more open about the other features of the Pixel 8 series, such as Assistant with Bard and Android 14, the addition of Face Unlock for banking and payments largely went unnoticed.

Although users of older Pixel models may not switch to the Pixel 8 solely for this reason, there are other compelling reasons to consider upgrading, particularly with the Pixel 8 Pro. Both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are available for pre-order and shipments are set to begin on October 12. The Pixel 8 offers security features with its Tensor G3 chipset and Titan M2 chip, along with long-term software support, making it a solid choice for those in search of a new Google-made flagship device. The Pixel 8 Pro boasts impressive features such as the Tensor G3 chip, high brightness, and enhanced camera capabilities, thanks to Google’s image processing algorithms.
