California Governor Gavin Newsom has been extending an offer of assistance to tech executives in the state, according to a report by Politico. The report claims that Newsom has sent prepaid, inexpensive cell phones, often referred to as “burner” phones, to approximately 100 CEOs. Each phone includes Newsom’s personal number and a customized note, with one message reportedly stating, “If you ever need anything, I’m a phone call away.”

This gesture is seen as unusual given the presumption that California’s executive class has long held the belief that Newsom supports their interests. Moreover, it raises questions during a time when the tech industry is increasingly associated with a growing authoritarian oligarchy. The move suggests an alignment with these powerful companies, which could prove politically risky for Newsom, especially if he has presidential ambitions, as some speculate.

In addition to this initiative, Newsom has launched a podcast titled “This Is Gavin Newsom.” The podcast, however, has not garnered significant attention. Its approach involves engaging with right-wing figures in an attempt to find common ground, a strategy that some Democratic voters might not find appealing. They prefer a leader who actively counters Republican tactics rather than one who seeks camaraderie with figures like Charlie Kirk, known for his controversial statements about public employees and the separation of church and state, or Steve Bannon, a controversial former Trump advisor.

The Democratic Party is currently facing criticism for its lack of effective strategies, with favorability ratings reportedly at a historic low. Amidst political turmoil, Democrats are perceived to lack a coherent approach or strong leadership. While some, such as Jon Stewart, have criticized the party’s ineffective actions, there remain suggestions for Newsom’s future strategy.

To enhance his prospects, Newsom might consider adopting a platform akin to Bernie Sanders’ style of economic populism and prioritizing social welfare programs. This approach could differentiate him from more conservative stances and potentially strengthen his appeal if he decides to pursue a future presidential bid. However, if Newsom continues on his current political trajectory, his future success may remain uncertain.
