Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, is gradually advancing its Grok chatbot to be on par with leading competitors such as ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. On Wednesday night, xAI announced the introduction of a “memory” feature for Grok. This new function allows the chatbot to recall details from previous interactions, enabling it to provide more personalized responses based on user preferences accumulated over multiple uses.
ChatGPT has long offered a similar memory feature, which was recently enhanced to reference a user’s entire chat history. Similarly, Google’s Gemini also possesses persistent memory capabilities that customize its replies according to individual user interactions.
According to a post from the official Grok account on the platform X, the memory feature is described as “transparent,” allowing users to view what information Grok retains and to choose what they want the chatbot to forget.
Currently, the memory feature is available in beta on the Grok.com website and the Grok apps for iOS and Android devices, but remains inaccessible to users in the European Union and the United Kingdom. Users can deactivate this feature via the Data Controls page in the settings menu. Additionally, users can delete individual “memories” by selecting the respective icon within the Grok chat interface on the web and soon on Android devices.
xAI has stated that it is working on integrating the memory feature into the Grok experience on the platform X.
