The Pixel Buds Pro 5.9 update is now available, following its announcement at the Pixel 8 and Watch 2 event. One of the main additions is Conversation Detection, which uses AI to recognize when the wearer is talking. This feature pauses any audio and activates Transparency Mode, allowing the wearer to hear their conversation partners clearly. When the wearer and their conversation partners stop speaking, Active Noise Cancellation and music resume. The update also introduces a “Hearing Wellness” feature that measures the decibel level of what the wearer is listening to in real time and provides exposure measurements over time. Additionally, the update brings Bluetooth Super Wideband support, Clear Calling to enhance voice quality during calls, and reduced latency for gaming on the Pixel 8.

Another feature of the Pixel Buds Pro 5.9 update is the Pixel Buds web app for ChromeOS, which allows users to switch between noise cancellation and transparency modes, change settings, and install firmware updates. This feature could be particularly useful for iPhone owners who use Google headphones. However, the web app does not appear to be widely rolled out yet.

Overall, the Pixel Buds Pro 5.9 update enhances the functionality and user experience of the Pixel Buds Pro. The addition of Conversation Detection and Hearing Wellness demonstrates Google’s commitment to leveraging AI and technology to improve communication and protect users’ hearing. The update also brings improved voice quality during calls, reduced gaming latency, and the convenience of a web app for managing settings and firmware updates.
