In a recent development, tech giant Nvidia is facing a lawsuit from a group of authors, including Brian Keene, Abdi Nazemian, and Stewart O’Nan, who claimed that their copyrighted works were used without permission to train Nvidia’s artificial intelligence platform NeMo. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco federal court, alleges that Nvidia infringed on their copyrights by training NeMo on a dataset of 196,640 books, which included works such as Keene’s “Ghost Walk,” Nazemian’s “Like a Love Story,” and O’Nan’s “Last Night at the Lobster.”

The authors are seeking unspecified damages for individuals in the U.S. whose copyrighted works were used to train NeMo’s large language models in the last three years. Nvidia has faced similar lawsuits related to AI copyright infringement, dragging the company into a growing legal battle over the use of copyrighted content in training AI models. Despite the pending litigation, Nvidia’s stock has seen a significant surge, with its market value reaching nearly $2.2 trillion due to its role as a leading chipmaker for AI technology.

As Nvidia grapples with the legal challenges surrounding its use of copyrighted material in training AI models, the lawsuit highlights the complex intersection of technology and intellectual property rights. The case underscores the importance of respecting copyright laws in the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, where companies must navigate legal considerations while pushing the boundaries of innovation. The outcome of the lawsuit could have broader implications for the tech industry and set a precedent for how copyright infringement claims are addressed in the AI sector.
