On October 15, 2024, during a strike rally in Seattle, Washington, people gathered at the Seattle Union Hall to support the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). The union announced on Saturday that a new contract proposal had been reached with Boeing, potentially ending a strike that has been ongoing for over a month and has disrupted the manufacturer’s production. The union has scheduled a ratification vote for Wednesday.
Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor, Julie Su, met with the involved parties earlier in the week. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 751 stated, “With the help of Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor Julie Su, we have received a negotiated proposal and resolution to end the strike, and it warrants presenting to the members and is worthy of your consideration.”
The strike commenced on September 13, following the overwhelming rejection by more than 30,000 machinists of a tentative agreement proposing 25% wage increases over four years. Boeing subsequently made an improved offer, which the union criticized for not being negotiated. In a statement, Boeing expressed anticipation for the employees’ vote on the negotiated proposal.
