On Wednesday, China disclosed that it has lodged an appeal with the World Trade Organization (WTO) seeking a ruling on the recent tariffs imposed by Canada on Chinese electric vehicles and metal products.
In August, Canada declared it would implement 100% import tariffs on electric vehicles produced in China, mirroring actions previously taken by the U.S. and the European Union due to concerns about perceived unfair subsidies. These tariffs were put into effect on October 1.
China’s Ministry of Commerce, in a statement, asserted that Canada “insisted on following certain countries in taking unilateral repressive measures against China,” based on a translation by CNBC.
The ministry announced that it has initiated a lawsuit against what it termed Canada’s “unilateralism and trade protectionist practices” with the WTO. It also revealed the commencement of an anti-discrimination investigation into Ottawa’s restrictive measures.
According to the ministry, these actions will “disrupt and distort the global industrial chain and supply chain.”
Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet provided a response to CNBC’s request for comment.
