Eli Lilly’s Zepbound: New Weight Loss Drug – 13 Things to Know

A brand new weight-loss drug called Zepbound has just been approved, and it’s the most effective medication available so far. The meaning of this weekly injectable drug, made by Eli Lilly, is that it’s part of a new type of drug, GLP-1 agonists, which have become popular in recent years. Abeight-loss drug that also helps with food cravings, Zepbound’s active ingredient, tirzepatide, is also said to help improve the body’s breakdown of sugar and fat. In trials, people lost an average of 52 pounds when taking Zepbound. The Food and Drug Administration has approved the drug only for adults with a body mass index of 30 or higher. However, at around $1,060 for a month’s supply, Zepbound is still expensive.

People that opt to take Zepbound could expect to experience uncomfortable side effects. People who are pregnant are discouraged from taking Zepbound. During the beginning of treatment, people may experience side effects, but those typically disappear with long-term use. Zepbound should also not be taken by people with depression or suicidal thoughts. Zepbound will be available to be prescribed after Thanksgiving. At this stage it is unknown how many doses of Zepbound will be available this year. Given the expected high demand for the drug, there may be shortages. However, Lilly has said that the supply is expected to increase through 2024. This means that more people may be able to access the drug as time goes on.
