Ford Europe design director Amko Leenarts has revealed a modern reinterpretation of the classic Capri, drawing inspiration from the popularity of SUVs since the original production ended in 1986. This new version of the Capri continues Ford’s trend of reviving classic nameplates with modern twists, following in the footsteps of the electric Mustang SUV and the Maverick pickup truck.
The beefier Capri will be available in both rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations, with extended-range options and a “premium” trim level for each. Ford is touting an impressive maximum range of 627km (about 390 miles) on a single charge for the extended-range RWD model, based on European WLTP estimates. This new electric Capri is the second model to be built on Volkswagen’s MEB electric vehicle platform, following the Explorer EV, and shares similar specs with Volkswagen EVs like the ID.5 and ID.4.
With its sportier design and positioning as a middle option between the Explorer and the Mustang Mach-E in Ford’s lineup, the electric Capri offers a unique blend of classic nostalgia and modern electric technology. Despite its similarities to the Explorer EV, the Capri’s distinct appearance and updated features set it apart as a stylish and forward-thinking addition to Ford’s electric vehicle offerings.
