In an unexpected turn of events, a JetBlue plane clipped another JetBlue plane early Thursday at Boston’s Logan International Airport. The left winglet of JetBlue Flight 777 struck the right horizontal stabilizer of JetBlue Flight 551, an Airbus A321, at 6:40 a.m. while on the deicing pad at Logan, the Federal Aviation Administration said. Passengers and crewmembers onboard Flight 777, which was en route to Las Vegas, and Flight 551, which was bound for Orlando, were taken by surprise when the wingtip of one plane collided with the other plane’s tail. Despite the unexpected delay, no injuries were reported, and passengers were ultimately able to continue onto their destinations, albeit approximately five hours behind schedule.
JetBlue reported that one plane entering a deicing pad came into contact with the other JetBlue aircraft that was on an adjacent deicing pad, resulting in damage to both planes. Brian O’Neil, a passenger onboard the flight to Las Vegas, shared his experience, stating that he noticed another plane parked in the area to get deiced and thought they were really close before feeling a noticeable bump. According to O’Neil, it felt like the plane had hit a pothole, and it was clear that they weren’t going anywhere fast after the collision. Despite the inconvenience, Brian O’Neil remained optimistic, stating, “As long as no one got hurt, we will get out there eventually. The Super Bowl is on Sunday.” JetBlue, echoing the sentiment of passenger safety as a priority, vowed to work to determine how and why the incident occurred and address any safety concerns.
