This week, The Quaker Oats Company issued a recall of over 60 products due to concerns of possible salmonella contamination. Originally, the company had recalled 43 products but later added 24 more items to the list. These products include Quaker Chewy Granola Bars, Gatorade protein bars, Cap’n Crunch bars, Quaker Simply Granola Cereals, Gamesa Marias Cereal, and other cereals. The contamination was uncovered in December, where no illnesses have been reported. Quaker has taken a proactive approach by offering customers an opportunity to be reimbursed for the recalled products.
Salmonella, which is a type of bacteria, is responsible for causing over 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the United States every year. The customers have been advised to check their pantries for any of the products by the Food and Drug Administration and dispose them straight away. Even though the recall was listed on their website, the company made no comment when contacted to provide more information. This supposed contamination comes at a time where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a recent salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupes that left two people dead and postponed a threat of vegetables, fruits, and meats being removed from the market.
