Sampriti Bhattacharyya, the founder and CEO of Navier, a pioneering electric-boatbuilder in the U.S., has defied traditional gender constraints in her native India to pursue her passion for technology and entrepreneurship. From her teenage bedroom in Kolkata, Bhattacharyya reflects on her journey from a small local college to becoming a roboticist and aerospace engineer in the States. Despite facing many failures along the way, she persisted and pivoted when necessary, eventually launching Navier in 2020. With a core team of experts and $10 million in seed funding, Navier has designed the N30, an advanced electric foiling yacht that aims to provide a cleaner and more efficient mode of transportation on the water.
Growing up in India, Bhattacharyya faced limited expectations, with the best that was expected of her being a housewife or a low-key job. However, her fascination with space and curiosity about ocean exploration led her to pursue her passion for technology and robotics. After numerous failed attempts, Bhattacharyya finally scored a coveted internship at Fermilab, inspiring her to start her own company. Despite setbacks, Bhattacharyya remained determined and flexible, pivoting her focus to building an operating system for existing boats and eventually envisioning the next generation of vessels.
Navier’s flagship product, the N30, is a 30-foot electric foiling yacht equipped with advanced technology and sensors that adjust the foils based on wave conditions, providing passengers with a smooth ride. With two electric motors and its innovative design, the N30 is 10 times more efficient than traditional gas-powered boats. Navier plans to deliver between 30 and 50 N30 crafts by the end of next year, with the ultimate goal of expanding its offerings to include electric water taxis and barges in coastal cities worldwide. For Bhattacharyya, the success of this vision would be a testament to her determination and perseverance.
