Donald Trump indicated that tariffs would be imposed on smartphones and other consumer electronics imported from China into the United States. This move has dashed hopes for a reprieve for large technology companies like Apple, Nvidia, and Microsoft.
The US president stated on his Truth Social platform that no exemptions would be granted regarding the unfair trade balances and non-monetary tariff barriers imposed by other countries, particularly emphasizing China’s treatment of the United States as the worst.
His administration had previously decided to exclude phones, chipmaking equipment, and certain computers from significant “reciprocal tariffs,” a decision considered a major advantage for technology sectors. These sectors had experienced a decline in stock values following the commencement of a global trade war initiated by Trump on April 2.
