Trump confirmed the retraction of the New York Republican’s nomination in a post on Truth Social, emphasizing the necessity of retaining every Republican seat in Congress.
The President remarked on the importance of unity to fulfill their mission and highlighted Stefanik’s critical role in their efforts, requesting her continued presence in Congress as a key ally. Trump did not disclose a new nominee for this last remaining Cabinet position.
This sudden withdrawal signifies increasing anxieties among House Republicans, spearheaded by Speaker Mike Johnson, regarding their precariously thin majority, especially ahead of two special elections in Florida. Even the slightest loss of seats could shift the House majority to Democrats, potentially derailing efforts to advance Trump’s extensive agenda in the forthcoming months.
Speaker Johnson lauded Stefanik, formerly the No. 4 Republican leader in the House, for her “selfless” and “patriotic” decision after the announcement from Trump.
Johnson, in a post on the social platform X, acknowledged the tenuous Republican majority and noted that Stefanik’s decision would allow her to remain as one of the most resolute members within the Conference, aiding in promoting Trump’s America First policies. He extended an invitation for Stefanik to return immediately to a leadership role, though he did not specify what position she might assume, as there are currently no vacancies.
Stefanik, speaking on Fox News’ “Hannity,” stated that the decision was influenced by multiple issues, including the potential delay in electing her replacement, the imminent special elections in Florida, and the Republican majority’s fragility in the House.
Originally, Trump had nominated Stefanik for the U.N. role shortly after his reelection in November. Although she was considered one of the less controversial appointments, with her nomination progressing out of committee in January, the slim Republican majority kept her confirmation in limbo for several months.
In recent weeks, it seemed Stefanik’s nomination might advance to the Senate floor amid two special elections in Florida districts won by Trump in 2024. Winning these seats would have allowed Republicans more leeway in legislative activities in an increasingly divided Congress.
Though these districts are historically Republican, Democratic leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, are eager to narrow the gap, especially following a Democratic victory in a Pennsylvania special election in Republican-favored regions. This result has prompted caution among Republicans, with some members expressing significant concern over their standing.
Trump’s communication on Thursday also hinted at apprehension about retaining Stefanik’s seat if she assumed the U.N. role, despite her district being one of New York’s most conservative. Stefanik won her recent reelection by a comfortable margin.
In response, Jeffries commented on the nomination withdrawal, describing it as a reaction to fears of losing Stefanik’s seat in a special election. He criticized the Republican agenda and questioned their claimed mandate.
Stefanik’s withdrawal marks the fourth instance where a Trump administration nominee did not complete the confirmation process. Prior nominees, such as Matt Gaetz for attorney general, Chad Chronister for the Drug Enforcement Administration, and Dr. David Weldon for the CDC, also faced withdrawal.
Stefanik had been caught in an extended state of limbo, unable to perform her Congressional duties or engage with the U.N. The vacancy of a U.S. ambassador at this time coincided with critical global discussions on major conflicts, such as those between Russia and Ukraine, and Israel and Hamas.
In late February, under Trump, the U.S. mission diverged from European allies by abstaining to attribute blame to Russia for its Ukraine incursion during U.N. resolution votes seeking an end to the war. Throughout the transition, Deputy U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea has represented America’s New York mission.
