Vietnam has proposed eliminating all tariffs on imports from the United States following an announcement by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a 46% tariff on the Southeast Asian nation. This information comes from an April 5 letter from Vietnam’s communist party, as reported by Bloomberg.
The proposal was extended by the party’s chief, To Lam, in a correspondence addressed to the U.S. President. In the letter, Lam requested that the United States refrain from imposing any further tariffs or fees on Vietnamese goods. Additionally, he sought a postponement of the recently announced tariff’s implementation, suggesting a delay of at least 45 days past April 9.
This correspondence aligns with remarks made by Trump on his Truth Social network last Friday, following a discussion between the two leaders. Vietnam, which has increasingly served as a significant manufacturing and export hub alternative to China, was subject to one of the highest global tariff rates as of last Wednesday.
