Polestar is initiating a recall of over 27,800 Polestar 2 electric vehicles in the United States due to a potential issue with the rearview camera display. According to a report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected models—manufactured between 2021 and 2025—may experience visualization problems when the vehicle is in reverse, displaying a “Camera is temporarily unavailable” notice.
The NHTSA highlighted that a malfunctioning rearview camera display can increase the risk of a crash. The vehicles in question were produced from July 2020 through late November of the previous year.
The issue is attributed to a “synchronization error between the Parking Assist Camera (PAC) and the Infotainment Head Unit (IHU)” and a problem within the IHU’s video receiving hardware, as described in the recall report. Polestar plans to address the issue via a software update, which will maintain the high-speed signal connection between the PAC and IHU continuously, rather than toggling it on and off. Additionally, the update will incorporate a reset for the IHU video signal receiving hardware if a synchronization error occurs, rather than merely displaying an error message.
Owners of the affected Polestar 2 vehicles can expect to receive notification letters about the recall on June 19. Although the Polestar 2 was first introduced to the U.S. market in 2020, the company no longer produces this model for the U.S. market. Polestar, headquartered in Sweden, continues to offer its range of electric vehicles across 27 global markets.
