MONTREAL, Oct. 01, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — CN (TSX: CNR) (NYSE: CNI) has released its Winter Plan for 2024-2025.
In preparation for the operational challenges that winter typically presents, CN has developed its Winter Plan after integrating insights and feedback from its railroaders, customers, supply chain partners, and stakeholders. This collaborative effort aims to establish proactive solutions across the network, facilitating a seamless transition to winter operations. By addressing these tasks beforehand, CN ensures its capability to provide safe and reliable services to its customers and the broader North American economy.
Tracy Robinson, President and Chief Executive Officer of CN, emphasized the importance of this preparatory work for maintaining service quality during the winter months.
Key aspects of the 2024-2025 Winter Plan include:
Leveraging technology: CN will implement its 4th generation Autonomous Track Inspection Program (ATIP), utilizing ground-penetrating radar to evaluate ballast and subgrade conditions, enabling prompt repairs.
Enhancing network reliability: In 2024, CN invested more than $1 million to refurbish 20 air cars, including the replacement of air compressors and other major components. Since 2009, CN has allocated $61.6 million to its air car program, which helps reduce the need to shorten trains during cold weather, thereby improving service reliability and maintaining capacity.
Response Readiness: CN maintains a strategic reserve of locomotives in crucial corridors to mitigate weather-related delays and deploys backup power generators across the network, ensuring continued operations during localized or widespread power outages.
- People: From April 2023 to May 2024, CN increased its available operating employees by 9%.
