The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a recall of nearly 500,000 pounds of ready-to-eat breakfast sandwiches due to misbranding issues. Hearthside Food Solutions, LLC, based in Salt Lake City, is recalling 489,887 pounds of sausage and bacon breakfast sandwiches because they contain sesame, an allergen that can be deadly for some consumers.
Many of the affected products were distributed to Army & Air Force Exchange Services (AAFES) locations around the country. The recalled items include 8.35-ounce and 7.3-ounce individually film-wrapped sandwiches of “LETTIERI’S FOOD TO GO Sausage, Egg & Cheese FRENCH TOAST BREAKFAST SANDWICH” and “LETTIERI’S FOOD TO GO Bacon, Egg & Cheese FRENCH TOAST BREAKFAST SANDWICH,” respectively. These products have lot codes starting with the numbers 23, 24, and 25 up to 2508451 and bear the establishment number “EST. V4907” within the USDA mark of inspection.
Although the recall is related to sesame, the sandwiches do not contain sesame seeds but instead include sesame flour as part of their French toast component. This ingredient was not listed on the product labels, which led to the discovery of the issue by the producing establishment. Currently, no adverse reactions or injuries have been reported, but consumers concerned about potential health risks are advised to contact healthcare providers if necessary.
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service expressed concern that some of these products may be stored in consumer or AAFES freezers or refrigerators. The agency recommends that the products either be discarded or returned to the place of purchase. FOX Business has reached out to Hearthside Food Solutions for further comment.
