According to a new West Health-Gallup survey, fewer Americans are now able to afford or access the medical treatment and medications they need. In 2024, only 55 percent of U.S. adults can be considered “cost secure” when it comes to healthcare, a significant drop from the percentage in 2022. This means that a larger number of American adults are now classified as either “cost insecure” or “cost desperate,” indicating that they struggle to pay for or access necessary medical care and medication.
The survey also revealed that nearly half of U.S. adults have skipped a doctor’s appointment or medication due to financial constraints or lack of easy access. Among the different age groups, younger adults between 18 and 49 are more likely to forgo medical treatment or prescribed drugs compared to older adults aged 65 and above. This decline in affordability and accessibility of healthcare represents a concerning trend that has been exacerbated over the past few years, as fewer Americans are now able to cover the costs of necessary medical care and medications.
The data collected from the West Health-Gallup survey highlights the growing challenges faced by many Americans in accessing affordable healthcare. With 37 percent of adults experiencing difficulties in paying for or accessing medical treatment and medication, and an additional 8 percent classified as “cost desperate,” it is evident that a significant portion of the population is struggling to meet their healthcare needs. As healthcare costs continue to rise, it is crucial for policymakers and healthcare providers to address these affordability issues and ensure that all Americans have access to the medical care they require.
