Loren Torres reported that TikTok is once again facing a tight deadline, as the social media platform has only a few days left to find a new buyer or risk being banned in the United States. President Trump has set a deadline for TikTok’s parent company, China’s ByteDance, to sell its U.S. operations by April 5.
The U.S. Government has long expressed concerns that TikTok may pose a national security threat, with lawmakers worried that the Chinese Government could compel ByteDance to provide data collected on American users.
Previously, TikTok faced a brief ban in January under the outgoing Biden Administration. However, President Trump, upon taking office, placed a 75-day hold on the ban to give ByteDance additional time to secure a buyer. Despite the deadline approaching, Trump remains optimistic that a deal will be reached, stating, “We have a lot of potential buyers, there’s tremendous interest in TikTok. The decision is going to be my decision. I’d like to see TikTok remain alive.”
Currently, TikTok boasts over 170 million users in the United States.
