Before the commencement of WrestleMania 41 on Saturday night, WWE made a significant announcement. The company revealed its acquisition of the Mexican professional wrestling promotion Lucha Libre AAA. Additionally, WWE will host a collaborative event with NXT in Los Angeles this June, titled “Worlds Collide.”
This announcement has notably impacted the professional wrestling community. WWE has recently embraced the luchador style of wrestling by signing talents such as Penta and Rey Fenix and introducing the masked wrestler El Grande Americano, widely speculated to be Chad Gable.
Paul Levesque, WWE’s Chief Content Officer, addressed the strategic decision to acquire AAA during a press conference following WrestleMania 41, where Seth Rollins triumphed over Roman Reigns and CM Punk in the main event. Levesque emphasized WWE’s objective to “grow Lucha Libre,” highlighting the significant influence of this wrestling style in Central and Southern America and certain regions of the United States.
Levesque expressed that when he thinks of Mexico, AAA and Lucha Libre come to mind. He believes Lucha Libre provides a platform for athletes to expand their reach beyond local arenas to achieve global fame. He clarified that WWE is not looking to diminish the culturally important aspects of the product but rather to enhance and expand it, offering talents the chance to achieve worldwide recognition.
El Hijo del Vikingo, a top star in AAA, was present at WrestleMania 41, witnessing El Grande Americano’s victory over Fenix. The Worlds Collide event is scheduled for June 7 at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California.
