A fire in downtown Falmouth, Massachusetts, injured three people, including a firefighter, and caused extensive damage to apartments situated above multiple businesses on Main Street. The fire quickly escalated to a third alarm, with heavy flames coming out of the building and running through several apartments to the rear of the building. Several commercial spaces on the first floor also suffered water and smoke damage, and Falmouth police urged people to avoid the area. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and inspectors will be working to determine the extent of structural damage caused by the fire.
Fire Chief Timothy Smith reported that two people escaped the burning apartments and were transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, while a third person inside the apartments at the time of the fire refused care. The injured firefighter was treated for a minor injury and has been released from medical care. A handful of apartments on the second floor were damaged, and it is unclear how many people have been displaced as a result. It is likely to be some time before anyone can reoccupy the area due to the extent of the damage caused by the fire.
The scene of the fire, which appeared to show heavy flames shooting from the second floor, included businesses such as Twigs of Falmouth, Sea Bags, Homespun Garden, and Pickle Jar Kitchen. The Falmouth Fire Department and State Fire Marshal’s Office are working together to investigate the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.
