Bob Menendez may blame wife in legal strategy, filing reveals.

Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) may attempt to deflect blame onto his wife, Nadine Menendez, for withholding information in a case that resulted in federal bribery charges, according to recently unsealed court documents. In a legal brief, Menendez’s lawyers reveal their strategy to demonstrate his innocence by highlighting how Nadine either kept information from him or led him to believe that nothing illicit was happening. The defense team initially wanted to keep these details confidential, fearing it could unfairly influence potential jurors, but they were released after media organizations filed a request.

Both Bob and Nadine Menendez will face separate trials as ruled by a federal judge, with the senator’s trial scheduled to start on May 6 in Manhattan federal court and Nadine’s expected to commence later in the summer. The legal saga began when Menendez and his wife, along with two associates, were indicted in September on charges connected to allegedly using his political influence to benefit the Egyptian government through shady dealings involving cash, gold, and other perks. Prosecutors later added charges of extortion and obstruction of justice in March, alleging that the couple accepted bribes in exchange for political favors.

Notably, one of the bribes cited was a Mercedes-Benz C-300 convertible supposedly gifted to Nadine while she was romantically involved with the senator. Prosecutors claim this luxury vehicle was part of a scheme to influence Menendez’s actions regarding criminal proceedings involving individuals connected to a business associate. The unfolding legal drama highlights a complex web of alleged corruption and abuse of power at the highest levels of government, with both Menendez and his wife facing serious legal consequences.
