In a recent news conference held at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, discussed the Trump administration’s tariffs and budget plans on April 4, 2025. Schumer’s decision to assist Republicans in passing a spending bill—with no compromises benefiting the Democrats and effectively extending Donald Trump’s control over the government—has led to significant discontent within his own party. This dissatisfaction became evident when Schumer had to cancel several stops on his promotional tour for his new book, “Antisemitism in America: A Warning.”
David Klion, a columnist for The Nation and frequent podcast guest, reviewed Schumer’s book for The Baffler and appeared on the podcast to discuss both the book and Schumer’s political journey.
Jeet Heer, serving as a national affairs correspondent for The Nation and host of their weekly podcast, “The Time of Monsters,” authored the article. Heer also writes a monthly column titled “Morbid Symptoms” and has previously published works including “In Love with Art: Francoise Mouly’s Adventures in Comics with Art Spiegelman” (2013) and “Sweet Lechery: Reviews, Essays and Profiles” (2014). His contributions have appeared in various publications such as The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and The Guardian, among others.
