Severe thunderstorms have caused widespread power outages in Michigan and Ohio, leaving more than half a million homes and businesses without electricity. The storms, which brought heavy rains and strong winds, also included at least one confirmed tornado in the region. The National Weather Service Offices in Detroit and Grand Rapids confirmed an “extremely dangerous” tornado near Williamston, Michigan. The storm conditions caused vehicles on Interstate 96 to overturn, trapping some drivers inside. In Ingham County, emergency crews are working to clear downed trees and power lines, and residents have been urged to seek shelter indoors.

As a result of the severe weather, nearly 400,000 people in southern Michigan and over 200,000 in northern Ohio are currently without power. The storms are a continuation of a previous round of heavy rainfall that occurred earlier in the day, causing 7 to 8 inches of rainfall in some areas. The earlier downpours led to flight cancellations at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and prompted the closure of roadways due to flooding. Although the roadways have since reopened, about 18% of flights originating from the airport were canceled.

The impact of the severe storms and tornado in Michigan and Ohio has been significant, with widespread power outages, overturned vehicles, and damage to properties. Emergency crews are working tirelessly to restore power and clear debris. The situation remains dangerous, and residents are advised to stay indoors and take necessary precautions. The damage caused by the storms has disrupted normal life in the affected areas, including flight cancellations and road closures. The local authorities and weather services are monitoring the situation closely and providing regular updates to ensure the safety of the residents.
