An explosion at the W.T. Waggoner Building in Fort Worth, recently remodeled as the Sandman Signature Fort Worth Hotel, caused at least 21 injuries. One person was critically injured, four seriously injured, and the remaining injuries were minor. The hotel restaurant, Musume, announced that all three employees working at the time of the explosion were injured, but there were no customers in the restaurant. The Fort Worth Fire Department indicated that the explosion was likely caused by a gas leak and confirmed that construction was ongoing in the building.

The explosion took place at 3:30 p.m, blowing out at least two floors of the high-rise building and causing visible damage to the building’s facade and adjacent parking lot. The ATF is investigating the scene and working in coordination with Atmos Energy to secure the area. Even though the Fort Worth Fire Department has confirmed the presence of a gas odor, they have not yet confirmed whether the gas smell caused the explosion or was a result of it. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has offered his support and stated readiness to provide additional resources if required to ensure the safety of those in the area. The building has been evacuated, and a two-block perimeter around the hotel has been cordoned off, with police urging people to avoid the downtown area.

The W.T. Waggoner Building, a historic 20-story tower in downtown Fort Worth, was originally built more than 100 years ago. It underwent a recent restoration to become the Sandman Signature Fort Worth Downtown Hotel in 2019. Examination on the building’s stability is pending, and authorities have announced that a missing person after the blast has been located. It is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
