Hillside collapse near California dam claims lives of two children.

Two children tragically died after a hillside by a dam and river in Northern California collapsed. Shasta County Sheriff’s Office announced that the children got caught in the rocks and debris that fell down the hillside around 9 a.m. The bodies of the juveniles were later recovered and water was reduced from the dam to lower the river as officials searched for them. The sheriff’s office expressed their condolences to the families of the victims, but the names and ages of the children were not immediately released.

The Chappie-Shasta Off-Highway Vehicle Area is where the incident occurred, and there is now an ongoing investigation into what happened and how the children ended up in the water. California has had heavy rainfall recently, possibly leading to the tragedy, with Redding and the Shasta area recording more than 4 inches of rain in the most recent storm. The National Weather Service reported rainfall totals in various locations, including Redding receiving around 2 inches last week and more than an inch over the weekend. The sheriff’s office has not determined whether the rainfall was a factor in the hillside collapse.

The Bureau of Land Management, which controls the area where the collapse occurred, describes it as hilly with overlooks of the Sacramento River. The Shasta Dam that crosses the river is around 600 feet tall and the water it holds forms Shasta Lake, a reservoir north of Redding. Camping is also allowed in the area.
