A 39-year-old man has tragically died following a shark “encounter” at Maui’s Paia Bay. According to the Maui Police Department, Ocean Safety Officers at the beach rushed to help the male victim who had sustained injuries from the shark attack. They immediately transported him to shore via jet ski, where first responders attempted life-saving measures before transporting the victim to the nearby Maui Memorial Medical Center. Unfortunately, the man later succumbed to his injuries after being treated at the hospital.

The man’s identity is being withheld in order for his extended family and friends to be notified of his death. The incident has led to the closure of the Baldwin Beach Park and Lower Pā’ia Park (Baby Beach), and shark warning signs have been posted for a mile in either direction of where the attack took place. The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources has advised that the signs will be removed by noon on Sunday should no further signs of shark activity be detected. Meanwhile, authorities have launched an investigation into the tragedy and no further details have been released at this time.

This fatal shark “encounter” has sent shockwaves through the community and prompted beach closures as an ongoing investigation seeks to understand the tragic events that led to the man’s untimely death. Despite the swift actions of Ocean Safety Officers and other first responders, the man was unable to recover from the severe injuries inflicted by the shark attack. The community is in mourning as officials work to gather more information about the incident and ensure the safety of beachgoers in the future.
