A 54-year-old Minnesota man, Nicolae Miu, was convicted for the slaying of Stillwater High School student, Isaac Schuman, and the stabbing of four others who were tubing on the Apple River in St. Croix County, Wisconsin. The incident occurred in late July 2022 when Miu attacked the group after being accused of approaching children in the water while tubing with his wife and others. This led to a confrontation where Miu allegedly used a knife to fatally stab Schuman and wound the other victims.

Miu was found guilty of first-degree reckless homicide, four counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and one count of battery by a Wisconsin circuit court jury. Despite claiming self-defense, Miu’s actions were deemed excessive by prosecutors who argued that he had opportunities to de-escalate the situation. While Miu expressed disappointment with the verdict through his defense attorney, Aaron Nelson, the victim’s family mourned the loss of Schuman, a promising student preparing to study electrical engineering at various universities.

The tragic incident has left a community in mourning for Schuman, a bright young student with a promising future ahead. Miu’s actions have resulted in irreversible consequences, with Schuman’s family left devastated by the loss of a beloved son and brother. As the legal process unfolds, the community grapples with the aftermath of a senseless act of violence that has forever changed the lives of those involved.
