World economies are experiencing uncertainty as President Donald Trump prepares to implement tariffs against several nations on what he terms “Liberation Day.” Trump views tariffs as a versatile tool akin to duct tape in politics, using them for various objectives such as negotiating, generating revenue, and shielding American manufacturing from foreign competition. He has previously employed the threat of tariffs to influence Canada and Mexico’s border policies and sees them as a means to help balance the financial impact of his proposed $4.5 trillion in tax cuts.

Despite these multiple and sometimes conflicting objectives, there remains a degree of ambiguity regarding the overall strategy of Trump’s tariff policy, especially with another significant round of tariffs anticipated to be announced soon. Rana Foroohar, a columnist for the Financial Times and author of “Homecoming: The Path to Prosperity in a Post-Global World,” describes these tariffs as an “experiment” with the potential to significantly alter the global economic landscape.
