A storm system is expected to bring snow from the Mountain West to the Northeast, including parts of the New York City metro area early next week. Snow is also forecasted as far south as western Texas, but limited snowfall is anticipated in the nation’s midsection due to a lack of cold air. Uncertainties remain regarding the amount and exact location of the snow expected in the Northeast, making the snowfall forecast quite challenging. However, confidence is growing that parts of the Interstate 95 corridor from New York to Boston could receive more than 5 inches of snow.

This news brings relief to many living in the Northeast, as it will be the first time in at least two weeks, and possibly longer, that they will see snow. Most major cities in the Northeast are experiencing significant snowfall deficits of at least 15 inches, indicating a scarce winter of snowfall. Prior to reaching the East, the storm system will bring snow to the Rockies, parts of the Plains, and the Midwest. The snowfall forecast for the Northeast is subject to change over the next few days as computer forecast models narrow in on this system, leaving travelers and residents in the affected areas to stay updated on the latest alerts and forecasts.

The National Weather Service has also issued winter alerts for areas where the storm system will bring snow this weekend, including parts of the High Plains, the Front Range from Colorado to New Mexico and Texas Panhandle. While the forecast track of the storm system in the Northeast remains uncertain, there is a possibility that it could extend into southern New England, making for potentially snowy Tuesday morning and afternoon commutes. Such snowfall will not only impact travel but could also lead to flight delays at major Northeast hubs.
