A man was arrested this week for his participation in the U.S. Capitol breach on Jan. 6, 2021. Kevin Michael Alstrup, a former contractor for the State Department, was taken into custody on charges including entering and remaining in a restricted building, disorderly conduct, and picketing or parading in the Capitol building. Records show Kevin Alstrup had previous experience providing security for high-ranking government officials and sensitive locations. FBI agents found posts he made on social media and identified him through body camera footage and his supervisor identified him from photographs taken inside the Capitol.
The man charged in connection with the U.S. Capitol breach in January, Kevin Michael Alstrup, previously contracted for the State Department as a diplomatic security officer. Despite his experience, he was involved in breaching the Capitol during the violent riot. Additionally, it was identified that Alstrup spent time inside the Capitol taking pictures of others rioters. From a government perspective, those who are honored with such protection should never abuse the privileges extended to them. The Capitol attack has led to a large number of arrests, with over 1,265 people facing charges across nearly all 50 states. The aftermath of the Capitol breach has resulted in severe legal consequences, with one man serving six years’ imprisonment for his involvement.
In addition, a former U.S. Marine who worked as a low-level State Department aide in the Trump administration was sentenced to nearly six years in prison for his role in the Capitol breach. In addition to the significant number of arrests and criminal charges faced by those involved in the Capitol breach, some 440 individuals have been charged with assuming or impeding law enforcement, a felony. This incident emphasizes the high number of arrests and harsh legal penalties faced by many of those involved.
