Laphonza Butler was sworn in as the new senator for California, filling the seat left vacant by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Vice President Kamala Harris, a long-time ally and adviser of Butler, administered the oath of office during a ceremony that received applause from the Senate floor and gallery. Butler, the former president of EMILY’s List, becomes the third Black woman to serve as a senator in U.S. history. She is also the first openly LGBTQ person to represent California in the Senate.

Governor Gavin Newsom quickly selected Butler as Feinstein’s replacement, and President Joe Biden called her to congratulate her on her appointment. With Butler’s swearing-in, the Democrats now hold a 51-49 majority, giving them the ability to fill Feinstein’s seat on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Butler, who currently resides in Maryland, has re-registered to vote in California, but it is uncertain whether she plans to run for the Senate seat in the future. She will serve the remainder of Feinstein’s term, which ends in early 2025.

Overall, Laphonza Butler’s appointment as California’s new senator brings a historic and diverse representation to the Senate. As the third Black woman and first openly LGBTQ person from California to hold this position, Butler carries a strong legacy in the fight for equality and progressive values. Her appointment also emphasizes the Democratic Party’s efforts to prioritize diversity and inclusivity. With the Democrats holding a slim majority in the Senate, Butler’s presence will likely have a significant impact, particularly in filling important committee positions. However, her future political plans and potential Senate bid remain uncertain.
