According to the New York Times, former U.S. President Donald Trump, if re-elected in 2024, plans to intensify his initial immigration restrictions by implementing broad roundups of individuals to be held in large camps for deportation. Trump’s proposal, labeled as an “assault on immigration unseen in modern American history,” aims to annually deport millions of people, including long-term U.S. residents. The plan includes reviving the ban on entry from certain Muslim-majority nations and rejecting asylum claims based on alleged infectious diseases. To carry out this ambitious operation, Trump would redirect Pentagon funds and recruit help from local police and National Guard troops.
The main goal of Trump’s immigration policy seems to be to reduce the number of immigrants in the United States without having to go through the prescribed legal process. According to the report, this plan is part of Trump’s strategy to secure the Republican presidential nomination for the 2024 election and confront current U.S. President Joe Biden in a rematch of their 2020 contest. The Biden-Harris campaign has already criticized these proposed immigration measures, citing the extreme and divisive nature of such policies.
In addition to establishing large holding camps with the aim of deporting millions of people every year, the plan also involves reviving policies from Trump’s first term and employing harsh measures to prevent asylum. Furthermore, Trump’s strategy includes measures such as screening visa applicants for ideological beliefs and seeking to end birthright citizenship for children born in the United States to undocumented parents.
