Two visitors at Lake Mead National Recreation Area were recorded on video destroying ancient rock formations, prompting park rangers to seek the public’s help in identifying the suspects. The video captured the visitors scaling towering rock formations along the Redstone Dune Trail and pushing large slabs of sandstone to the ground, causing irreversible damage to the federally-protected formations that were shaped over millions of years. The destruction was deemed “appalling” by the recreation area spokesperson, John Haynes.
The incident, which occurred on April 7th, has prompted park rangers to urge anyone with information or who was on the trail at the time to come forward and submit a tip. The suspects are facing vandalism charges, and if caught, could potentially face federal charges, jail time, or large fines. As the recreation area covers 1.5 million acres and relies on visitor assistance to monitor and protect the area, Haynes emphasized the importance of reporting any unusual activity to park authorities to preserve the park’s natural beauty and resources.
