As “Andor” season two approaches the timeline of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” a popular droid character has not yet appeared, and there is a clear reason for this absence. K-2SO, the imposing Imperial security droid played by Alan Tudyk, was one of the more demanding effects in the original film due to the mechanical complexity of the character.
According to showrunner Tony Gilroy, who spoke to the Hollywood Reporter, fans anticipating K-2SO’s origin story will find it rewarding when it finally unfolds in season two of “Andor.”
Gilroy noted that the decision to limit K-2SO’s presence originated from the challenging experience of creating “Rogue One.” He admitted that determining how long to delay K-2SO’s introduction was a significant part of their initial conversations, due to the logistical challenges of incorporating the character.
He explained the complexity further, highlighting that within “Rogue One,” there were situations where K-2SO had to be hidden or remain on the ship, as the character posed storytelling challenges. Gilroy expressed that these limitations made K-2SO a difficult element to manage and dictated the timing of his inclusion.
Gilroy added that while K-2SO is a fantastic and humorous character with Tudyk’s comedic talents, they aimed to make his introduction into the show a spectacular event. The efforts were focused on making his involvement significant and memorable.
“Andor” season two releases new episodes weekly on Disney+.
